The Slovak Republic (short form: Slovakia/Slovensko, long form Slovenská republika) is a landlocked state in Central Europe. It has a population of five and half a million and an area of about 49,000 square kilometres (19,000 sq. miles). Slovakia is bordered by the Czech Republic and Austria to the West, Poland to the North, Ukraine to the East and Hungary to the South. The largest city is the capital, Bratislava. Slovakia is a member state of the European Union, NATO, the United Nations, the OECD and the WTO among others. Slovakia is a small but picturesque country. Its treasures and beauties are not something that all the world is talking about. Even so, the country has so many wonderful sights and natural beauties that there is sure to be something that will charm you. You should not overlook it when planning a tour of Central Europe.
