Prehistoric pile-dwellings around the Alps

This serial property of 111 small individual sites surrounds the remains of the prehistoric pile-dwellings - houses standing on stilts - settlements in and around the Alps. These bizarre houses were built around 5000 to 500 B.C. at the banks of rivers, lakes and wetlands. Excavations, only dug in some of the sites, provide the insight to the life in Neolithic and Bronze Age in Alpine Europe and the way how the communities lived in touch with nature. 56 of the sites are located in Switzerland. The settlements are well-preserved, very extraordinary and culturally rich archaeological sites, which enable to study the early agrarian society in the region.
